About the history, Allariz and his surroundings is a zone traditionally linked to tanning, which were introduced by the Jews in XII century.
During XVIII, XIV centuries and starts of XX, the tanner was the industrial and economic principal activity of Allariz, having the most labour of the zone. Doing this the activity where around all live of village. But with news technologies the craftsmanship couldn´t survive and the factories start to close his doors, reaching many of these to be in ruins.
Today, thanks to Allariz town hall have restated many of these workshops in ruins, changing them into museums, accomodations or restaurants.
The Vilanova factory, before to be a tanner was of Sanjuanistas Order, and then in XVI century was converted in a ancestral home, the unique of the zone. In final of XIX century was reconverted in the leather tanner factory that was working until the 50 years. Today can to see the pylons and grindings. Actually is a restaurant.
The Nogueira´s family tannery have a important part of the building to near of Arnoia River, with his restoration was converted in the Museum. In this zone can to locate the pylons of tanning, the tools used for collected in this trade (peeling knives, tables, lunettes, mallets, pliers, electric top, etc.), about understanding along with the explanation offered in the panels, all the tanning process.
Also have the Tanners of Meire factory of this village, also dedicate at tanner work. But in his basement this house has not jars and finalization of process zones.
The Lombarda Tower factory works how defensive Tower of the village. In XVI century was named The Big House and at starts of XIX century the factory start to be the Tanner of Leather factory. Today then of his restructuration and reparation is a rural hospice.
The A Casqueira factory is the biggest factory of Allariz, because have 2 buildings in the Vilaboa village. Today is reconverted in rural buildings. But in this buildings are conservator the evolution and innovation of the tanner process, which also show the paddles to accelerate the process, techniques of modernization of the sector.
